UCInetID Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a UCInetID?
Your UCInetID is your key to online services at the University of California, Irvine. Many online services, including SNAP, WebFiles, Webmail and NACS Mailbox Services, EEE, and numerous others, require you to use your UCInetID and password in order to log in.
How do I get a UCInetID?
Faculty, staff, and students are automatically assigned one when you are either entered in the payroll system or you enroll in classes. You will need to activate your UCInetID and choose a password.
I've activated my UCInetID. Now what? How do I check my email?
There are several different ways of checking your email.
  1. You can use WebMail from your Internet browser.
Simply go to: http://webmail.uci.edu and login with your UCInetID and password.
  2. You can configure an email program on your local computer to connect to the server and download your email using POP or IMAP. Such programs include Eudora Pro, Outlook Express, and Thunderbird.
  3. You can login directly to the server using SSH and check your email using Pine.
  4. The Everything You Need to Know to Get Started with Pine manual is available on-line and at the NACS Help Desk.
I activated my UCInetID and can check my mail on the NACS Mailbox server, but no one can send me email. Why not?
Your delivery point may not be set. This is not done automatically for faculty and staff because many departments have a local email system. Check with your Computing Support Coordinator to see if you should set this to NACS Mailbox Service.
I'm doing research at UCI, but I'm not being paid. Can I still get a UCInetID?
Yes, you may apply for a Sponsored UCInetID if you have a sponsor.
I'm taking Access UCI classes through University Extension. Am I eligible for a UCInetID?
You are eligible for a UCInetID during the quarter you are taking Access UCI classes.
Will I have to pay for my UCInetID?
Individual UCInetIDs are free as long as you are a current student or employee of UCI. (Group UCInetIDs do have a small monthly fee associated with them.)
Can we get a UCInetID for our department or group?
Yes, group UCInetIDs are available for a small monthly fee as a second UCInetID for a current UCI faculty, staff, or student; for departmental use, when the department wants a descriptive email address, for example, NACS@uci.edu; or as a shared UCInetID to be used by more than one person affiliated with UCI for UCI purposes.
How long after I leave UCI can I keep my UCInetID?
Generally, employee UCInetIDs are only guaranteed while you are actively employed by UCI. After your leave the University, your account will be locked and then deleted. The deletion policy and schedule are available.

UCI retirees may keep their UCInetIDs and keep or obtain a NACS MailBox email address. Contact the Center for Emeriti & Retirees to sign up.

Alumni will retain their current UCInetID indefinitely for use in accessing UCI services. This provides continued access to the NACS wireless network when on the UCI campus and access to the Registrar's StudentAccess service so that you can retrieve your grades and transcripts. Other services will be added in the future.
I don't like the UCInetID that was assigned to me. How can I change it?
In some circumstances, including legal name changes, data processing errors, hardship cases, and first-time requests from faculty, staff and graduate students, you may request that your UCInetID be changed to a different, name-based, ID.
I forgot my password. How can I find out what it was?
Your password file is encrypted. We have no way of telling you what it was. If you activated your UCInetID after July 2003, you were asked a secret question that will allow you to reset your own password. If you don't have this option, you will need to bring a picture ID to the NACS Help Desk at E2130 Engineering Gateway to have your password reset or call the Help Desk, (949) 824-2222, to find out if someone in your department has access to resetting your account.
I don't know what my UCInetID is. How can I find out?
Generally, your UCInetID is the first part of your email address and is based on your name. For example, if your email address is someone@uci.edu, your UCInetID would someone. If you don't know your UCI email address either, you can call the Help Desk at (949) 824-2222 and give us your employee or student ID number. We can tell you what your UCInetID is.
I don't know what my Employee ID number is. How can I find out?
Your employee ID number starts with 09 and is printed on your pay stub. If you no longer get a printed pay stub, you can check with your payroll personnel in your department.
How do I delete or deactivate a UCInetID?
If you are leaving the university, your UCInetID will be deleted per our deletion policy. If you would like to have your UCInetID deleted before that date, contact NACS at nacs@uci.edu.
Is there a question we haven't answered?
Submit your question to nacs@uci.edu or call the NACS Help Desk at (949) 824-2222.
