Product Enhancement Advisory - RHEA-2004:264-07
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:
Updated crash package

An updated crash package is required to properly support the newly
introduced diskdump package in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3.

Description:
The crash package can be used to investigate live systems, kernel core
dumps created from the netdump package, the mcore kernel patch offered by
Mission Critical Linux, and the LKCD kernel patch.

The kernel diskdump has been created as an alternative to netdump. Like
netdump, diskdump creates an ELF core dump file representing the kernel
memory image at the time of a system crash. The vmcore dump file created
by diskdump is identical to one created by netdump, and is analyzed by the
crash utility.

Arguably the most important feature of the crash package is its capability
of generating a kernel stack backtrace of the panicking process. While the
crash utility has always supported the analysis of Itanium processor
platforms, it only did so on live systems, because netdump does not
support the Itanium platform. While the diskdump package supports Itanium
platforms, the crash package was updated to properly generate backtraces
for panicking processes as well as for active processes running on other
CPUs at the time of the system panic. In addition, a minor update removes
a set of harmless error messages during crash session invocation if the
kernel being analyzed was booted with "maxcpus=1" on the boot command line.

In regards to x86 dump file backtraces, the only change required was to
properly search for the "disk_dump()" stack frame, as an alternative to the
"netconsole_netdump()" frame, and as the starting point of the backtrace.
This updated version of crash would be functional, but it would skip over
the "disk_dump" frame, and start at the next higher function frame.

All users of crash should upgrade to this updated package, which resolve
these issues.

Taking Action
-------------
You may address the issues outlined in this advisory in two ways:

     - select your server name by clicking on its name from the list
available at the following location, and then schedule an
       errata update for it:
           https://rhn.redhat.com/network/systemlist/system_list.pxt

     - run the Update Agent on each affected server.

---------------------------------
Changing Notification Preferences
---------------------------------
To enable/disable your Errata Alert preferences globally please log in to RHN
and navigate from "Your RHN" / "Your Account" to the "Preferences" tab.

        URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/network/my_account/my_prefs.pxt

You can also enable/disable notification on a per system basis by selecting an
individual system from the "Systems List". From the individual system view
click the "Details" tab.

---------------------
Affected Systems List
---------------------
This Errata Advisory may apply to the systems listed below. If you know that
this errata does not apply to a system listed, it might be possible that the
package profile for that server is out of date. In that case you should run
'up2date -p' as root on the system in question to refresh your software profile.

There are 17 affected systems registered in 'Your RHN' (only systems for
which you have explicitly enabled Errata Alerts are shown).
