 Sun(sm) Alert Notification

    * Sun Alert ID: 47353
    * Synopsis: A Rare Race Condition and Security Vulnerability May Cause System Panic
    * Category: Availability, Security
    * Product: Solaris
    * BugIDs: 4676535
    * Avoidance: Patch
    * State: Resolved
    * Date Released: 30-Jul-2003
    * Date Closed: 30-Jul-2003
    * Date Modified:

1. Impact

A system panic may result from a rare race condition or a local unprivileged user running exploit code.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

    * Solaris 2.6 without patch 105181-35
    * Solaris 7 without patch 106541-25
    * Solaris 8 without patch 108528-19
    * Solaris 9 without patch 112233-05

x86 Platform

    * Solaris 2.6 without patch 105182-35
    * Solaris 7 without patch 106542-25
    * Solaris 8 without patch 108529-19
    * Solaris 9 without patch 112234-05

3. Symptoms

The panic string is a generic "BAD TRAP: type=31". The stack trace will include the kernel routine "psig" as shown in the examples below:

BAD TRAP: type=31 rp=2a100d8b8d0 addr=3042fb44 mmu_fsr=0
    unix:panic+0x1c
    unix:die+0xa4
    unix:trap+0x8b8
    unix:sfmmu_tsb_miss+0x640
    unix:prom_rtt+0x0
---> <trap>genunix:psig+0xa0
    genunix:psig_shared - frame recycled
    genunix:post_syscall+0x3ec
    unix:syscall_trap32+0x158

or

BAD TRAP: type=31 rp=2a100d8b8d0 addr=3042fb44 mmu_fsr=0
    unix:panic+0x1c
    unix:die+0xa4
    unix:trap+0x8b8
    unix:sfmmu_tsb_miss
    unix:prom_rtt+0
---> <trap>genunix:psig+0xa0
    unix:trap_cleanup+0x1cc
    unix:trap+0x16bc
    unix:panic - frame recycled
    unix:sys_tl1_panic+0x8
