Members of the UCI Community,
Another deceptive email virus is appearing on campus. This is a reminder that you should not open email attachments that you are not expecting, even if they appear to be from someone you know, or represent themselves as the people who are in charge of the network or your email server.
The latest virus variants (Bagle.j and Bagle.k) claim to be sent from "the uci.edu team" or " support@uci.edu " or other official-sounding addresses. In some cases, the message asks that you download the attached file to scan for viruses or to correct a problem with your email access. The .zip file attached to these infected e-mail messages contains a virus - DO NOT OPEN IT. Instead, delete the message.
The virus uses a variety of deceptive claims in an attempt to trick people into opening the attachment. Please be advised that messages from Network and Academic Computing Services (NACS), and other UCI technical support groups are specifically identified and signed. NACS does not send attachments and ask that the recipient open and execute them. If you have any doubt about whether a message you receive is actually from an official entity such as NACS, you are advised to check the entity's web site or contact them to be sure.
Campus virus scanning software has not been detecting this virus as it uses a password-protected, encrypted .zip file. NACS is now working on implementing a special fix to delete the virus email as it enters the campus. However, many virus messages have already gotten through, or will in the future. Caution is strongly advised.
