Connecting to UCI with Windows NT 4.0

Summary: This handout is a comprehensive set of instructions to configure Windows NT 4.0 to connect to the UCI LifeLine modem pool. These instructions require Dial-Up Networking and TCP/IP to be previously installed.

How to Activate Your UCInetID

  1. Before you connect to UCInet, you must have already activated your UCInetID. To do this, locate a computer that already has internet access and use the web at http://activate.uci.edu.

Creating a Dial-Up Networking Connection

  1. Double-click on "My Computer" then "Dial-Up Networking" (See Figure 1).

  1. If the New Phonebook Entry Wizard appears, check the box "I know all about phonebook entries and would rather edit the properties directly." If this wizard does not appear skip to Step 3 (See Figure 2). Click on Finish to continue.

  1. If the Dial-Up-Networking box appears, click on New (See Figure 3) otherwise, skip to Step 4.

  1. Under the Basic tab, type UCInet in the Entry name field and enter 824-9999 in the Phone number field (See Figure 4).

  1. Click on the Server tab. Uncheck IPX/SPX compatible and NetBEUI. Check TCP/IP, Enable software compression and Enable PPP LCP extensions (See Figure 5).

  1. Click on the Security tab. Check Accept any authentication including clear text. Click OK when finished (See Figure 9).

Connecting to UCInet
  1. To connect with UCInet, double-click on My Computer then Dial-Up Networking. Select UCInet and click on Dial. When the "Connect To" box appears, enter your UCInetID on the Username line and your password on the password line. Your UCInetID is usually the first part of your e-mail address and it must be entered in lowercase. Leave the Domain field blank (See Figure 6).

  1. Once connected, you can use a Web browser, check e-mail and use most other Internet programs. Installed software programs can be found by pressing the Start Button then Programs.

Editing the Username or Password

  1. If you need to edit your Username or Password and it does NOT appear when you click on Dial (See Figure 5), try clicking on My Computer then Dial-Up-Networking (See Figure 1). Select UCInet and click on More. Select Edit entry and modem properties (See Figure 8) the click on the Security tab. Click on the Unsave password button and then click OK (See Figure 9). Select UCInet and click on Dial Figure 5 should appear.

The Error Messages

There are two error messages that may appear when a user has either exceeded the time limit or when the wrong password and/or login name has been entered.

  1. If you receive the error message shown in Figure 10, you have entered an invalid username or password. Please retype your username and password in the "Connect To" window and try again (See Figure 5).

  1. If you receive the error message shown in Figure 11, you may have exceeded the Prime-Time limit. The Prime-Time limit is the maximum number of hours that you are permitted to be connected to the UCI modem pool during the prime-time hours of 6:00pm to 1:00am, Sunday through Thursday. This limit is a rolling time limit in which you may be connected to the UCI modem pool for a maximum of 10 hours in a continuous 7 day (168 hour) time period.
