Connecting to UCInet with Windows
XP
This handout is a comprehensive set of instructions to configure Windows XP
to work with the UCI modem pool.
How to Activate Your UCInetID
Before you connect to UCInet, you must have already activated your UCInetID.
To do this, locate a computer that already has internet access and go to the
webpage: http://activate.uci.edu.
Creating a Dial-Up Networking Connection
- Click on the "Start Menu" and open up the "Control Panel." Make
sure you are in Catagory View (located in the left pane) to follow
these instructions.

Choose "Network and Internet Connections."

Choose "Create a new connection" located
in the left pane.

A "New Connection Wizard" should pop up. Click Next.

Choose "Connect to the Internet" and
click Next to continue.

Choose "Setup my connection manually." Click
Next.

Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem". Click Next.

In "Connection Name," type "UCInet" as
the ISP Name. Click Next.
- In the "Phone Number to Dial" field, enter the number 824-9999. If
you are located outside of the 949 area code, enter 1-949 before the phone
number. Click Next.
- In the "Internet Account Information" please put your UCInetID
in the User Name field and then your UCInetID password in the Password and Confirm
password fields. Check the "Make this your default Internet Connection." This
will allow you to automatically connect to the UCI modem pool if you invoke
any program that uses an internet connection. Click Next.
- You are all finished. You may choose to put a shortcut on your desktop
for easy access on the final screen. Click Finish.
