Connecting to UCInet with
Windows 2000
This handout is a comprehensive set of instructions to configure Windows 2000 to work with the UCI modem pool.
How to Activate Your UCInetID
- Before you connect to UCInet, you must have already
activated your UCInetID. To do this, locate a computer that already has internet
access and go to the webpage: http://activate.uci.edu.
Creating a Dial-Up Networking Connection
- Click on the "Start" button, then highlight "Settings",
and then on "Network and Dial-Up Connections" (See Figure 1).

- A "Network and Dial-Up Connections" window should pop up. Double-click
on the "Make a New Connection" icon (See Figure 2).

- A "Network Connection Wizard" should be displayed. Click Next
(See Figure 3).

- Make sure the "Dial-Up to the Internet" option is selected and click
on Next (See Figure 4).

- This will bring you to the "Internet Connection Wizard." Choose
"I want to set up my Internet connection manually..." ,
and click Next
(See Figure 5).

- Choose, "I connect through a phone line and a modem" and click Next
(See Figure 6).

Type 949 in the Area Code box and then 824-9999 in
the Telephone Number box. Click Next when finished.

The next screen asks for you to enter your UCInetID on the Username
line and your password on the password line.

Please give this new account name "UCInet" and click next to set up your
email account.
- The next steps asks whether you would like to set up your email account.
Choose "No" and follow the guidelines at the following link
to configure your email for Eudora, Netscape Communicator, or Outlook Express.

To complete the Dial-Up-Networking process, click on Finish. A new
icon will be created in the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder.
