Introduction

Effective September 1, 1995, Network & Academic Computing Services (NACS) began to offer a "Dedicated Dial-up Modem Service". This service provides those UCI employees who request this service, a dedicated modem and unlimited connection time to UCInet and the Internet.

UCI faculty and staff who rely on dial-up modem service to work while off-campus can reduce the hassles related to the current "Free Modem Pool" by subscribing to the new "Dedicated Dial-up Modem Service". The"Dedicated Dial-up Modem Service" consists of V.34 compliant modems operating at speeds as high as 28.8Kbps, thereby providing the highest-available, standardized throughput offered by modem technology today.

Two Service Options

Individual Dedicated Dial-up Modem Service (IDDMS) provides one modem for a single faculty or staff member. A private telephone number and a dedicated modem will be provided as well as a password to protect access to this service.

Group Dedicated Dial-up Modem Service (GDDMS) provides the option to share a group (two or more) modems with two or more faculty and/or staff members within a department. Users will have a distinct telephone number and will share a common password.

This type of arrangement is particularly useful for individuals rotating "on call" duties or individuals that work at different times of the day while off-campus.

Note: GDDMS could result in modem contention among the authorized members participating in the group. NACS recommends IDDMS for those users accessing the network more than 12 hours per week.
