Connecting to UCInet Mobile Access with Windows 95/98

VERY IMPORTANT: Before applying the following changes to your computer´s networking configuration, write down your current networking configuration!

To use the UCI Mobile Access, you must first register your MAC (Media Access Control) address. You will need your UCInetID and password to authenticate.

  1. Open your wireless card configuration. There should be an icon under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel or on the taskbar.

  2. Set your "Network Name" or "SSID" to "UCInet Mobile Access" (case sensitive, no quotes). This is very important, or your connection will not work!
  3. Set the network type to "Access Point" or "Infrastructure". Also, disable any encryption options.

  4. Save your configuration, then open the Control Panel from the Start Menu (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel).

  5. Double click on Network.

  6. Click on the Configuration tab. Scroll down until you see TCP/IP, select it and click Properties.
Note: If you have another adapter such as Dial-Up Adapter installed, scroll down till you see TCP/IP -> Your Ethernet Device, select it and click Properties. (See Figure 1 below).1

  1. Click on the DNS Configuration tab and select the Disable DNS radio button.

  2. Click on OK twice and restart your computer when prompted.

If you scrolled down the entire list and did not see TCP/IP, you will need to add it. In the Configuration tab, click on Add. Then select Protocol, and click Add. Next, on the left panel under Manufacturer, select Microsoft. Then scroll down on the right panel and select TCP/IP and click OK. It will now install the TCP/IP protocol.

It will ask for the Windows 95/98 CD if the Windows 95/98 (.cab) files are not in your hard disk. One such place may be c:\windows\options\cabs or you may have to do a search on your hard drive(s) for "*.cab"
