System Management and Client Support
Under the supervision of the DCS manager, work as part of the DCS team in an academic, networked, heterogeneous computing environment (UNIX, Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X).With guidance from senior DCS system administrators, provide comprehensive multi-user system administration, network integration, and technical support (DEC, Linux, SGI, Sun, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X) to researchers, instructional personnel, and graduate students across the UCI campus. Support DCS clients maintaining highly specialized computer systems requiring expert-level technical solutions, such as UNIX based computing clusters, Windows Active Directory server, and departmental mail servers. Coordinate solutions to DCS client problems within NACS and with other UCI campus groups; interact directly with a variety vendor representatives and technical personnel.
Install system and application software, patches, and new releases; test and verify correct operation of new software; make documentation available. Guarantee that system security, file system integrity, and system operation are maintained. Customize DCS configuration scripts and procedures to effectively support client operating systems and applications.
Plan, specify, and configure new equipment and software installations for multi-user departmental servers as well as single user desktop workstations. Monitor system usage and adjust system parameters and setups as per user needs.Provide in-person, phone, and electronic mail support to DCS clients and their designated associates. Advise supervisor and colleagues of technical issues that affect support of other clients. Maintain a helpful, supportive attitude in the client community and promote a good image of NACS.

Software Development and Technology Assessment
With guidance from senior DCS system administrators, enhance the utilization of DCS time and resources by developing and maintaining software to automate the activities detailed above. Modify, as needed, existing installation scripts, makefiles, etc. for the installation and configuration of both new system administration tools and user application software. Assist with the development and planning needed to maintain DCSlib, NACS’s campus software library. Track current issues and standards pertaining to academic computing. Recommend new applications for system administration and end-user support. Monitor communications channels (newsgroups, periodicals, mailing lists, share e-mail) to learn of new software and enhancements to existing software. Analyze software and methods used at other universities and research sites for potential use at UCI. Evaluate pre-release products for use at UCI. Advise users of campus, departmental, and private computing systems on the use of UCI standard software and networking solutions. Write or obtain documentation on a wide variety of software and hardware related topics.Required / Corresponding Essential Function Number:

Work Location: Engineering Gateway, UC Irvine Campus - Network & Academic Computing Services office.Special Conditions of Employment: Must occasionally work non-standard hours to deal with system failures, and perform network upgrades during times when fewer users are effected. Will participate in after-hours call rotation to handle urgent technical problems.
