Starting Salary Range $10.50 - $15.60 hr., DOE

Summary: Network and Academic Computing Services (NACS) provides information technology leadership, expertise, infrastructure, and services in support of the research, teaching and community service goals of the University.  We proactively and collaboratively work with our campus colleagues to meet or exceed the service expectations of UCI faculty, students, and staff.

Student position is for the school year and Summer hours are desired.
Applicants must be Registered as Full-time or Part-time Undergraduate UCI students during the school year. 

Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

MUST BE A CURRENT, REGISTERED UC IRVINE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT (DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR).
Experience with UNIX operating system, preferably Sun Solaris or Red Hat Enterprise Linux;
Experience with UNIX shell scripting and programming languages, such as sh, Perl, Python, or C;
Good problem solving and organizational skills;
Excellent written and communication skills;
Ability to work in a team environment;
Strong desire to learn and develop technical skills;
Experience supporting Windows operating system (desired);
Experience with HTML coding and web design (desired);
Experience running Beowulf computing clusters (desired).

Final candidate is subject to a background check.
Workstudy award preferred but not required to be considered.

Position Description:

Under direct supervision, assist System Administrators with system management and client support by:

Installing system and application software, patches, and new releases; testing and verifying correct operation of new software; making documentation available. Guaranteeing that system security, file system integrity, and system operation are maintained.

Configuring new equipment and hardware components, such as disk drives, CPUs, and memory. Installing servers in machine room equipment racks connecting network, console, and KVM cabling as needed.

Compiling software for DCSLIB, a UCI campus software repository. Drafting announcements for end-users regarding DCSLIB changes. Developing and updating shell scripts and system configuration files.

Providing in-person, phone, and electronic mail support to DCS clients and their designated associates. Advising supervisor and DCS staff of technical issues that affect support of DCS clients. Maintaining a helpful, supportive attitude in the client community and promote a good image of DCS.

Other duties as assigned.
