Starting X
First, you have to find an available workstation and log in. Enter your
account name and password. See the appropriate chapter of this document for
more information about
logging in.
Next, type "xstartup" at the shell prompt. Your screen will clear and the
window manager will start to place your applications on the screen.
The mouse cursor will appear as a large "X" in the middle of your
screen.
In the default X environment, you should have the following windows:
- An xterm window which is the "console" of your workstation. This window is for displaying system messages (like ones announcing that your system is coming down) and should not be used for anything else. You should leave this window open so that you see the system messages when they come in.
- A window manager menu, displaying the currently-active X clients.
