Transferring files to and from PC's
To transfer files between a personal computer and your account, you use
a file transfer protocol to ensure that no errors occur during the
transmission. The file transfer protocol supported here at UCI is
called Kermit. For compatibility reasons, the older XMODEM protocol is
available through the "xmodem" program. Kermit is more accurate than
XMODEM and can be used in more "hostile" environments. If you have a
choice, you should use Kermit.
In both cases, you need a program on your personal computer which uses
one (or both) of these protocols. Versions of Kermit for PC-DOS and
Macintosh systems are available from the NACS main office, 360 Computer
Science.
