Text Processing using LaTEX and TEX
TEX is a powerful typesetting program which can be used to prepare
documents for printing on a laser printer. LaTEX is based on TEX but is
far easier to use. With both systems, you prepare a file using an
editor, run the file through LaTEX or TEX, and then use the "dvisp"
command to print the '.dvi' file created. This file is a
DeVice-Independent high-resolution representation of the printed
output. The same '.dvi' file can be printed on a variety of output
devices, including laser printers and typesetters and can be previewed
on graphics workstations.
The documentation for LaTEX is "LaTEX: A Document Preparation System" by
Leslie Lamport; for TEX, it's "The TEXbook" by Donald Knuth. Both are
available at the University Bookstore. For LaTEX, you should also get a
copy of the "Local Guide to LaTEX" from the NACS Consultants' office in
2130 Engineering Gateway.
