Folders
Folders are collections of mail messages. They allow you to organize
your mail. You can group messages in various ways, such as by topic, by
date, or by sender. It's also possible to have your outgoing mail put
in a folder. Folder names always begin with a plus sign (+) followed by
almost any other characters. As with
filenames, it's a
good idea to stick with letters, numbers, and the period unless you
know what you're doing.
What folders are out there?
The "folders" command will list the folders that you have. If you do it
now, you should see a message like:
Folder # of messages ( range ); cur msg (other files)
inbox+ has 9 messages ( 1- 9); cur= 8.
TOTAL= 9 messages in 1 folder.
This display indicates that you have one folder (called '+inbox') which
has 9 messages. The plus sign after the folder name indicates that
'+inbox' is the current folder, just as a plus sign after the message
number in a "scan" listing indicates the current message. In this case,
the current message in '+inbox' is message number 8. Notice that each
folder has its own current message. If you have more than one folder,
each one will be listed on its own line.
Switching to another folder
To move to another folder, use the "folder" command as in:
Now all your MH commands will refer to the messages in the '+projects'
folder. For example, the "scan" command will now list the messages in
your '+projects' folder.
When you use the "inc" command, you're automatically put back into the
'+inbox' folder.
Filing messages
To put a message into a folder, use the "refile" command followed by the
folder name. If you want to specify a message other than the current
one, put the message numbers before the folder name. (See
the next section
for more information about selecting messages.) Normally, the
message will be removed from your 'inbox' folder when you refile it;
specifying the "-link" option overrides that behavior. You can also
refile a message into several folders simply by listing all the folder
names. Here are some examples:
- refile +projects
- refile 12-15 +todo
- refile last -link +memos
Creating folders
To create a folder, just refer to it in a command (such as "folder").
You'll be asked if you want to create the folder. If so, just reply
"y".
