Logging In
Before you can log into any of the systems you must have an "account".
UCI students who are currently enrolled are eligible for a free Unix
account. Bring your student id to the on-duty consultant in Lab B,
1140 Engineering Gateway Building between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday. You may call 824-6116 for more information. Please
note that University Extension students must contact the University
Extension Office to request a computer account.
Computer labs are available for use by UCI affiliates - for example,
faculty, staff, students. The labs are located in 1140 Engineering
Gateway Building, and are open 24 hours a day, with the exception of
Tuesday mornings from midnight to 2 a.m. when the labs are closed
for cleaning.
If you are using a terminal, turn it on and press the [RETURN] key a
couple of times. You should get a prompt that looks like:
You are connected to CSI-TS3, a UCInet terminal server
csi-ts3>
The terminal server will let you connect to any system connected to the
UCInet, the campus computer network. You can connect to a system by
typing the name of the system. For example, if you wish to connect to
ea, you would type "ea" followed by [RETURN].
The Unix system will print a login message at your terminal. If this
message appears as garbage (or does not appear at all), press [RETURN]
a few times, pausing each time, until the login message

appears clearly, then type in your login name in lower case. (If you
type your login name with upper case letters, Unix assumes your
terminal cannot generate lower case letters and will translate all
subsequent upper case letters to lower case. You do not want this to
happen!) After entering your login name, you will be asked for your
password:
Password:
Your password will not be echoed on the terminal as you type it.
If you have entered either your login name or your password incorrectly, a
login incorrect
message will appear on your terminal, and you will have to repeat the
login/password sequence.
When you have entered both your login name and password correctly, you
will see a message giving the time of your last login and will then be
asked to specify the type of terminal you are using:
TERM = (vt100)
If you are using a VT100 terminal, simply press the [RETURN] key. If
you don't know what type of terminal you are using, ask a consultant.
Here's a table listing some other common terminal types and what you
should type:
Table: Common Terminal Types
Your terminal type What to enter at TERM = prompt
--------------------------------------------------------------
Wyse wyse75
Sun sun
Zenith Z-19 or Heath H-19 z19
DECwriter dw
Visual 500 vi500
C. Itoh 80 cit80
DEC VT52 vt52
DEC VT100 vt100
Datamedia dm1520
Qume vt100
xterm window xterms
If you enter the wrong terminal type,
or forget to specify the terminal type, use the command "ttyset".
The culmination of your login efforts is a "prompt character",
a sign that indicates that the system is ready to accept
commands from you. The prompt character is
the percent sign, %, unless you've customized it.
