Clearing Your Inbox
with Pine
Summary: When your e-mail is over quota,
these instructions will help you clear your Inbox with Pine.
Connecting to the Internet
Before you can setup and use putty, you must be connected to the Internet.
For instructions on connecting to UCI, either pickup a handout or locate a
computer that already has Internet access and go to the Web page http://www.nacs.uci.edu/network/modem/
What
is Pine?
- Pine (which stands Program for Internet News & Email)
is a tool for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages. When you use this program to delete mail from your inbox, you will be directly connected to the Unix server that holds them.
Getting Started
- First you will need to install or configure a SSH program to be able to log into your Unix account. Please follow the instructions listed below to do this first:
- After you have logged in choose option 1 (Pine) from the menu. (Figure 1)

- If you do not get a access menu, type in ' pine ' at the prompt and press Enter. (Figure 2)

Figure 2
- Press ' I ' to enter your Inbox. (Figure 3)
- To delete a message, press ' D '. This marks the message for later deletion; messages are not actually gone until they are "expunged."
- If you change your mind and do not wish to delete a particular message, press ' U ' to unmark the current message so it's no longer flagged for deletion.
- Finally expunge the messages marked for deletion by pressing ' X ' then ' Y ' to confirm.
- Hit ' Q' to quit Pine, ' Q ' to exit the access menu if you have one.
- Type' logout ' at the prompt to end your session and close the window.
