Configuring Spam Scanning for
Eudora for Windows
Summary: UCI has a site license for
the full version of Eudora 6. It is available for download at http://licenses.nacs.uci.edu/detail2.cfm?ProductID=11.
Version 6 includes built in Spam filtering. Use the instructions below to
configure both Eudora's built in SpamWatch filtering and UCI's SpamAssassin
rules.
Eudora 6.2 (available from the Licenses
database - UCInetID login required) has the spam filters built in. This
will only work for POP users. Turn on SpamWatch with headers to take advantage
of this feature.
Turning SpamWatch on in Eudora
- In Eudora, go to the Tools menu and select Options.
- Scroll down to Junk Mail. Put a checkbox next to "Hold
junk in Junk mailbox" to turn SpamWatch on. Messages tagged as Spam
will be moved to the Junk folder.
Configuring UCI's Spam Checking
This will create an additional layer of filtering for Spam using
UCI's SpamAssassin program that tags messages before they are delivered to
you. Messages that have a score of 5 or higher will be tagged.
- Click on the Tools menu at the top of the screen, then choose Filters.
(See Figure 1)
Figure 1
- Click the New button to create a new filter.
- Under the Match: heading, select Incoming.
- Enter the text "X-UCIRVINE-Spamscore" into the Header:
text box.
- Select contains from the dropdown box, and enter "sssss"
in the text box.
This will set your Spamscore to 5. You can lower this score by typing fewer
"s" for stricter filtering rules.
- Under the Actions: heading, select Transfer To.
- Click the button to the right of Transfer To and select
Junk (See Figure 2 for an example of the Filters configuration
window). This will filter email sent to your '@UCI.EDU' address.
- Repeat steps 2 - 6 to create additional filters. As an example, enter
"X-NACS_ES-MailScanner-SpamScore" into the Header: text box to create
an additional filter if you use E4E/EA for your email delivery point. Check
with your local Computer Support Coordinator in your School or Department
to see if there are additional Spam tags on their local mail delivery systems.

- Close the Filters window
- When asked if you want to save changes, click the Yes button
(See Figure 3)

Please Note: Because SpamAssassin and SpamCheck are
unable to determine with 100% accuracy if a message is unsolicited, you will
want to check your Junk folder frequently for legitimate emails, as well
as to delete the actual Spam.
Now you are setup for Spam filtering. If you have any problems, please call
the NACS Help Desk at 949-824-2222, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00
PM.
