Email: Authenticated SMTP for Windows

Eudora for Windows (versions 5.1 through 7.x)

Norton Anti-Virus Conflict

If you receive an error such as: "Unable to send an encrypted file ", it is likely due to use of a consumer version of Norton Antivirus configured to scan outgoing mail. You will need to disable scanning outgoing mail. If you use Norton Internet Security, it conflicts with our services. To use UCI's outgoing mail server, you will need to uninstall Norton Internet Security. Call the Response Center at (949) 824-2222 for more information.

On Windows, Eudora requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. Launch Eudora.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options....
  3. Select Sending Mail under the category list on the left side.
  4. Verify the SMTP Server is: smtp.uci.edu
  5. Make sure Allow Authentication is checked.
  6. Under Secure Sockets when Sending, make sure Required, STARTTLS is visible in the drop down window.
  7. Click OK.

Outlook 2002/2003 (XP) for Windows

On Windows, Outlook 2003 requires Service Pack 2 to use port 587 with authenticated SMTP. If you are using, Outlook 2003 before Service Pack 2 or Outlook 2002, you will need to use port 25 with authenticated SMTP.

  1. Launch Outlook
  2. From the Tools menu, select E-Mail Accounts.
  3. Select View or change existing email accounts, and click Next.
  4. Select the email account and click Change.
  5. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
  6. Verify the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is: smtp.uci.edu
  7. Click on More Settings.
  8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
  9. Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
  10. Make sure Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
  11. Click on the Advanced tab.
  12. Make sure that Outgoing server (SMTP) is set to 587 with Outlook 2003 SP 2 or 25 with earlier versions.
  13. Under Outgoing server (SMTP), make sure that This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
  14. Click OK on the More Settings window.
  15. Click Next.
  16. Click Finish on the email account window.

Outlook Express version 5 and 6 and Outlook 2000 for Windows

On Windows, Outlook Express version 5 or 6 and Outlook 2000 require the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. Launch Outlook Express.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  3. Select the Mail tab, select your Orion mail account and click on Properties.
  4. Click on the Servers tab.
  5. Verify the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) is: smtp.uci.edu
  6. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked.
  7. Under Outgoing Mail Server, Make sure that My server requires authentication is checked.
  8. Click on the Settings button.
  9. Select the option "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" .
  10. Click on the Advanced tab.
  11. Make sure that Outgoing Mail (SMTP) is set to 25.
  12. Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), make sure that This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
  13. Click OK.

Oracle Connector for Outlook 10.1.2

  1. Exit from Outlook.
  2. Right-click on Outlook in your Start menu and select Properties.
  3. Click the E-mail Accounts button.
  4. Under Email, click the View or change, and click Next.
  5. In the E-Mail Accounts window, select the Oracle Connector for Outlook account and click Change.
  6. In the Oracle Connector for Outlook window, click the SMTP tab.
  7. Verify that Server Name is set to smtp.uci.edu and click the Settings button.
  8. Click the check box for Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK.
  9. Back in the Oracle Connector for Outlook window, click the Advanced button.
  10. Change the Server Port to 587.
  11. Verify that the secure connection (SSL) box is not checked. (OCFO automatically does STARTTLS on port 587.)

Netscape 6 and 7 for Windows

On Windows, Netscape requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. Launch Netscape.
  2. From the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.
  3. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left side list.
  4. Verify the Server Name is: smtp.uci.edu
  5. Change the port to 587
  6. Make sure Use name and password is checked.
  7. Type your UCInetID in the User Name field.
  8. Set Use secure connection to TLS.
  9. Click OK.

Thunderbird 1.5

On Windows, Thunderbird requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. Launch Thunderbird.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  3. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left pane. Select smtp.uci.edu and click the Edit button.
  4. In the Settings window, change the Port to 587.
  5. Check the "Use name and password" box and enter your UCInetID in the User Name field.
  6. Click the TLS radio button under Use secure connection.
  7. Click OK.
