Using Your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) Outgoing Mail Server

Summary: If you send UCI email from home, you may need to set your outgoing mail server (SMTP) to use their server. Some service providers, like Cox, will not allow you to use another server. If UCI's authenticated SMTP instructions do not work, try using the server provided by your ISP.

Outgoing Mail Servers (SMTP)

If you use NACS email servers, you can use smtp.uci.edu as your SMTP server. You will have set it up to use "authenticated SMTP". We have instructions available. Verify the settings for the software you use.

If you encounter problems sending email from a non-UCI location you may need to change your SMTP server to reflect that of your ISP. Information and directions to change your SMTP server to your ISP are available below.

Using SMTP Servers Provided By Your ISP

You will need to contact your Service Provider for the correct SMTP server setting.

Windows (PC)

Eudora 3.0 - 6.x

  1. From the Tools menu at the top, choose Options
  2. From the Options window, click on the Hosts icon.
  3. Type in your ISP's SMTP server settings in the appropriate field.

Netscape 4.x

  1. From the Edit Menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Under Mail & Newsgroups choose Mail Servers.
  3. Type in your ISP's SMTP server settings in the appropriate field.

Outlook Express

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Accounts.
  2. Select your account.
  3. Click on the Properties button.
  4. Click the Servers tab.
  5. Change the Outgoing: server to your ISP's SMTP.

Macintosh

Eudora (Versions 2.1 - 6.x)

  1. From the Special menu at the top, choose Settings.
  2. From the Settings window, click on the Hosts icon.
  3. Type in your ISP's SMTP under in the appropriate field.

Netscape 4.x

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Under Category: choose Mail & Newsgroups.
  3. Under Mail & Newsgroups choose Mail Servers.
  4. Type in your ISP's SMTP in the appropriate field.

Outlook Express

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Under Sending Mail - SMTP Server:
  3. Type in your ISP's SMTP server settings.
